Motorcycles Race Into History
The first motorcycle hit the road in Germany in 1885. The so-called Daimler Reitwagen was designed and built by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. After the war, motorcycles remained common. Motorsports became more popular as well, with more people racing bikes and cars. During the Great Depression, some motorcycle companies went out of business, and the industry consolidated.
Massachusetts became the first state to require auto insurance in 1927. After World War II, more and more states began to require car insurance. However, this didn’t necessarily mean that motorcycle insurance was required. To this day, some states that require car insurance don’t require motorcycle insurance.
Further, while gasoline engines dominated the first century of motorcycles, many now rely on electric engines.
