Trucking companies that transport passengers or cargo for interstate transport must register with the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration). Commercial truckers that use intrastate routes but carry hazardous materials requiring a safety permit will also be required to get a USDOT number. 

Which Materials Are Hazardous? 

Some of the materials classified as hazardous materials include radioactive materials. Other hazardous materials include explosives and materials that may be poisonous when inhaled. This classification would also include methane and anhydrous ammonia.

Your USDOT Number 

A USDOT (United States Department of Transportation) number will be used as an identifying number during audits, compliance reviews, and inspections. The DOT will also use these numbers to keep track of safety statistics in the event of an accident. Trucks are required to display their USDOT number on both sides of the truck. The USDOT letters must be at least two inches high and be painted in a contrasting color to the primary color of the truck.
